You can share your location with friends in less than a minute. The easiest methods are WhatsApp live location, Google Maps location sharing, or iPhone Find My.

In this guide, you will learn how to share your location on WhatsApp, Google Maps, and iPhone. You will also learn how to send your location as plain coordinates, and how to stop sharing when you are done.

Quick privacy check before you share your location

Sharing your location is convenient, but it is also personal data. Take ten seconds to check three things before you send it.

First, share with the right person. Double-check the chat or contact name before you tap send. A location sent to the wrong chat cannot always be taken back.

Second, set a time limit when the app offers one. Live location in WhatsApp and Google Maps can auto-expire after 15 minutes, one hour, or eight hours. Use the shortest time that works for you.

Third, remember that anyone with your live link can see where you are until it expires. Only share live location with people you trust.

How to share location on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is the most common way to share location with friends. It works on both iPhone and Android, and the other person needs no special app.

To share your live location:

  1. Open the chat with the person or group.
  2. Tap the + icon (iPhone) or the paperclip icon (Android).
  3. Tap Location, then Share live location.
  4. Choose how long to share: 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours.
  5. Add a comment if you like, then tap Send.

Your friend sees your moving position on a map inside the chat. You can tap Stop sharing at any time to end it early.

To send a static pin instead of live tracking, tap Send your current location on the same screen. This sends one fixed point that does not update as you move. It is the better choice when you only want someone to find a meeting spot.

WhatsApp says live location is end-to-end encrypted. Only the people in the chat can see it.

How to share location with Google Maps

Google Maps location sharing works across iPhone and Android. It is ideal when the other person does not use WhatsApp.

  1. Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Location sharing, then New share.
  3. Choose how long to share: 15 minutes to 24 hours, or Until you turn this off.
  4. Pick the contact, or tap More options to copy a link.
  5. Send the link through any app: SMS, email, or messenger.

The recipient opens the link and sees your live position on a map. They do not need a Google account to view it.

To stop sharing, go back to Location sharing in Google Maps, tap the person, and tap Stop. You can also end every active share from the same screen.

How to share location on iPhone with Find My

If both of you use iPhones, Find My is built in and very simple.

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Tap the People tab at the bottom.
  3. Tap the + button, then Share My Location.
  4. Type your friend's name, number, or Apple ID email.
  5. Tap Send, then choose a duration: one hour, until end of day, or indefinitely.

Your friend gets a notification and can see you on their map. They can share their location back with one tap.

To stop, open Find My, tap the person's name, and tap Stop Sharing My Location. Find My uses end-to-end encryption, so Apple cannot see your position either.

How to share location with friends using coordinates

Sometimes you do not need live tracking at all. A simple pair of coordinates works in any chat, email, or document.

  1. Open LocationMe in your browser and tap Use Precise GPS.
  2. Copy your coordinates with the Copy button.
  3. Paste them into any message.

Anyone can paste those numbers into Google Maps or Apple Maps to find the exact spot. This method needs no special app and leaves no live trail behind you.

Coordinates are also the best option for saving a meeting point for later. Unlike a live link, they never expire. Note that LocationMe shares a static position only. It does not create live tracking links. For live tracking, use WhatsApp, Google Maps, or Find My as described above.

Coordinates shine in situations where live tracking is overkill. Paste them into a travel itinerary, a delivery note, or a customer support ticket. The recipient gets the exact spot with zero setup.

To use coordinates you receive, just paste them into the search bar of Google Maps or Apple Maps. Both apps understand decimal format like "24.8607, 67.0011" instantly. No conversion needed.

Live location vs static location: what is the difference?

Live location updates as you move. Static location is one fixed point. Pick the right one for the situation.

Live locationStatic location
Updates as you moveYesNo
Best for"I am on my way""Meet me here"
ExpiresAfter the set timeNever
Privacy exposureHigherLower

Use live location when someone needs to follow your trip in real time. Use a static pin or coordinates when you only need to mark a spot. If you are unsure how accurate your phone is right now, read our guide on how accurate phone GPS is.

When in doubt, start with static. You can always switch to live sharing later if the other person needs to track you.

How to stop sharing your location

Stopping is just as important as starting. Here is where to turn it off in each app:

  • WhatsApp: open the chat and tap Stop sharing.
  • Google Maps: tap your profile picture, go to Location sharing, tap the person, then Stop.
  • iPhone Find My: open the People tab, tap the name, then Stop Sharing My Location.

Also review your phone settings every few months. Old shares you forgot about may still be active. A quick check keeps your location private.

On Android, open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, and open Location sharing to see every active share in one list. On iPhone, the Find My People tab shows the same.

In WhatsApp, go to Settings, Privacy and review who can see your live location by default. Keeping the default audience narrow prevents accidental oversharing in new chats.
